Home Trained Certification
In Canada, a home-trained service dog is one trained by its handler to perform specific tasks. Certification provides legal recognition, ensuring your partner is welcomed in all public spaces across the provinces.
Home-Trained Service Dog Requirements
• Stable Behavior: The dog must demonstrate a calm, non-aggressive temperament in all environments, showing no signs of vocalizing, jumping, or lunging.
• Advanced Obedience: Mastery of core commands (sit, down, stay, come) with immediate responsiveness, even when faced with high-level distractions.
• Public Access Manners: The dog must remain under the handler's control at all times, walking professionally on a leash and ignoring food or strangers.
• Task Reliability: Successful performance of at least three specific tasks that directly mitigate the handler's documented disability with 90%+ success rate.
• Handler Responsibility: Demonstration of proper handler ethics, including maintaining the dog's hygiene, health, and respecting public business policies.
• Documentation: Maintenance of detailed training logs, ensuring the dog is fit for work.
